ACTION THRUST
Annual grants to senior school students for projects on topical environmental issues in Singapore and the region.
This grant, which started in 2002 is given annually. Successful applicants are given a grant to help realize their project, which must involve the environment. The grant allows applicants to put into action their solution for an environmental concern.
The proposals are judged according to the following criteria:
Creativity: Demonstrates a unique choice of topic, research methods or methodology.
Relevance to the region: The project covers an area which is topical and of importance to the region.
Research: Research methods and methodology are clearly presented, justified and appropriate for the proposed task.
Action outcomes: The project has a clear plan of action. The planned action is feasible and has the potential to make a difference to the environment.
Quality of proposal: The proposal: is complete, it addresses each of the criteria, is comprehensive, is well presented, shows clarity of thought, is well planned and is easily understood.
Supporting Documentation: The proposal has a clear and comprehensive forecast budget and an indication of sources and references, which will be used in the course of the research (maximum 2 pages).
As well as ensuring that the criteria in the Application Form have been satisfied, the judges look for:
· a new project with a unique and original focus – the fund is not intended to fund ongoing, existing projects.
· clear research methodology.
· a project which can be sustained.
· a clear breakdown of how funds will be spent.
· a project which will be able to promote and encourage environmental awareness outside the immediate confines of the school.

a. Making an organic hydroponics solution from worm casting
A research project to convert worm castings into an organic hydroponics solution.

Creation of an online radio two-week talk show programme to promote awareness of global environmental issues

c. Coral Reefs surrounding Pulau Dayang
A project to research and develop intervention and prevention techniques and programmes to protect the coral reefs surrounding Pulau Dayang.

d. “Treasure Child of the Sea” – a play
Production of a travelling play targeted at primary school students to draw their attention to the effects of mercury poisoning at Minamata, Japan.

e. Tectaria vasta – chemicals and consumables for mass propagation
A research and education outreach project on an endangered species of fern known as ‘Tectaria Vasta’. Research component focuses on finding out the chemical concentration between auxin and cytokinins for optimum growth of the fern. The education outreach component provides for materials where the public can learn more about the fern.
